WordPress is the self-hosted version of the software that requires you to buy web hosting to run it. This option requires more website knowledge.

  • You can update your website on your smartphone via the WordPress app.
  • Free SSL certificate installed so your site is secure.

  • You don’t have to stay with WordPress.com, meaning you can move your website and WordPress installation to another web host provider.

  • You have to perform most or all website maintenance.
  • You must choose a web hosting company which can not only install and run WordPress but fit your needs.
  • If you want a SSL certificate you may have to pay for it.
  • If you need tech support, you will have to search for answers online.
  • Improper updates and/or changes can result in downtime or even destroy your website’s data.

Which Version Is Right For You?

If you need a simple website or blog and you want it to just work, then the free version of WordPress.com is the best choice for you.

Maybe you want to run an Ecommerce store and need support, then WordPress.com is right for you.

Finally, if you don’t feel comfortable with website design or don’t have the time to learn it, then using the themes and designs WordPress.com offers is right for you.
