SEO: What Is It, And Why Is It So Important To Your Website?


This article is all about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I will explain what is, how important it is to the success of your website, and the tools you can use to implement it properly. Let’s go!

What Is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of growing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine. SEO refers to the improvement of unpaid results (known as “natural” or “organic” results) and excludes direct traffic and the purchase of paid placement.

SEO is the journey of getting your website to be among the top results whenever a person searches for a particular topic.

Let’s say you sell Egyptian cotton socks. Someone searches for “Where can I buy Egyptian cotton socks online?” Your website shows up in the top results if you employ good SEO tactics.

This marketing strategy is high in demand as everyone wants their website to show up at the top. Although you can pay to be at the top, but I will discuss that tactic later.

Why Is SEO Important To Your Website?

You want your website to show up at the top because more people are likely to click on it. Those clicks can turn into potential sales.

Also, the high placement in search engines makes your website appear to be trust-worthy. This is probably more important than obtaining clients or customers.

According to this website, “91.5 percent: The average traffic share generated by the sites listed on the first Google search results page.” Hence, if your site is on the second page, only 9.5% of searchers will click on it.

I exhibit this behavior myself. While rare, I do click on results on the second page. Yet, I almost never go to the third page.

How To Use SEO On Your Website Properly

There are various ways to implement SEO on your website depending on the platform you use.


You can implement SEO on your WordPress site using plugins. The top plugin is Yoast SEO. I use it on my WordPress sites and recommend it to everyone who uses the platform.

I love Yoast SEO because not only does the plugin makes SEO easy to use and configure, it also teaches you SEO techniques. Now I know when I’m using passive voice, or how to make Focus Keyphrase.

Yoast SEO is free to use, but they do have a non-free option that gives you more options. That costs $89 USD for 1 WordPress site. Though, I recommend using the free version first before paying for the plugin. You may find that you don’t need the additional options.

For those who do not use WordPress, you will have to manually create your own keywords to use you on your site. However, there are many free and non-free tools which can help. These tools allow you to perform research on your competitors to see what keywords they use.


  • Ahrefs: “Helps you learn why your competitors rank so high and what you need to do to outrank them.”
  • SEMrush: Complete SEO workflow so you can market your site better.


  • Ubersuggest: “Ubersuggest allows you to get insight into the strategies that are working for others in your market so you can adopt them, improve them, and gain an edge.”

How-To Videos

I came across these videos recently while browsing YouTube, and these channels provide great knowledge on how to improve your SEO.

Monitoring Your Strategy

One of the best ways to monitor your SEO strategy is to check your site’s performance on Google Search Console. Another good option is to monitor the number of visitors to your website using Google Analytics.

Google Search Console

Search Console tools and reports help you measure your site’s Search traffic and performance, fix issues, and make your site shine in Google Search results.

This tool allows you to see if your site is performing properly. If you have any errors or dead links or mobility issues, you will see alerts. Next, you will receive instructions on how to improve and/or correct those errors.

To use Google Search Console properly, you must have access to the web hosting portion of your site so you can perform some configurations.

Google Analytics

Get a deeper understanding of your customers. Google Analytics gives you the free tools you need to analyze data for your business in one place.

With Google Analytics, you can see the countries your visitors come from, what parts of your site gets the most traffic, and the length of each visit. This tool offers more and Google offers an extensive training guide.

Paying For Top Results

While employing SEO strategies, you can also pay for Search Ads from Google or other search engines so your website shows up at the top of search results. Yes, this option costs money but you can set your budget. However, the more you spend the more results you will probably get.
