If you are looking for a web hosting company that will allow you complete control over your WordPress installation then consider DigitalOcean. Although this option can be costly depending on the plan you choose you get what you pay for.
What Is DigitalOcean?
We make it simple to launch in the cloud and scale up as you grow – with an intuitive control panel, predictable pricing, team accounts, and more.
You can use the service for the following technologies:
- Apps (like Docker, WordPress, LAMP, etc.)
- Load Balancers
- Cloud Firewalls
And this short list of just a few of the technologies or services you can deploy and/or use on DigitalOcean.
The Pros Of DigitalOcean
After testing the service for almost 3 months, the biggest pro of the service is the complete freedom to configure and run your website. This is especially true if you want to install WordPress, which is what I did.
When you choose other web hosting companies to run your WordPress installation, you usually can’t choose the operating system. But with DigitalOcean you can install the Linux operating system of your choice, and choose your RAM and disk space.
From there, you choose whether you want a shared CPU or a dedicated CPU (which is more expensive). Finally, you choose the amount of RAM and disk space. I went with the shared CPU option and chose the cheapest option which is $5 a month.
Once you have everything chosen, DigitalOcean will install the specified operating system onto your server (or “droplet” as they call it). Then you’re ready to roll! You are free to install and configure as many WordPress installations you want.
The Cons Of DigitalOcean
Now that we discussed the pros of this service, I need to discuss the cons: You have complete freedom over the server.
Brittbot, you said that was a pro.
I did. However, this is also a con. Since I “own” the droplet, I must do all the regular maintenance tasks. I have to check for updates and apply those. As for backups, I need to configure those too. Now the site offers backups for an additional fee if you want to go that route.
Hence, you are the System Administrator and you need to take this role seriously. Especially if you’re using your droplet to run an Ecommerce business. If you don’t apply updates in a timely fashion, you could leave your server vulnerable to hackers and scammers. Worse yet, if you don’t configure your server properly, you can leave it open to hackers and scammers.
Finally, if you apply the wrong update or make a change improperly, you can take down your website and/or destroy data on your droplet. This can have untold consequences, including lost business and a marred reputation.
So Is This Service Right For You?
If you have a popular website or application and you need control over your server, then DigitalOcean is right for you. You will have the freedom to configure and control your server to cater to your clientele.
However, if you are just starting out with your application or website, then I suggest using Shared Hosting. It’s cheaper and there’s less maintenance involved.
You made it to the end! Thanks for reading this post and visiting Brittbot. Make sure you bookmark this website so you can stay current and improve your business’ website.
